Joe, download the Dragon Rider 500 User's Guide and take a look at the schematic on page 9. This is for the 28-pin target device socket and applies to the ATmega168. It shows all the parts you need and is field-tested. Also, read the caution in the last complete paragraph on page 2 before you connect up AREF. There may be other bits in there that apply to your project as well.
