ok. i get it now. i was being thick. 
i'll give it some thought. 
i already have the axiom build set up in this way
for the various intermediate subdirs (src/int/obj/mnt)
so it is likely that i can hack it so there can be
build options for the 4 parts of the grid.

of course, there is no such thing as a simple job.
