I'd suggest that you create a new branch in the root version
of Makefile.pamphlet called 'silver'. So someone who wants to
build the silver version would use something like:

export AXIOM=~/mnt/silver

or 

export AXIOM=~/mnt/linux-silver

or some such. That way you can experiment with compatible changes
to the build procedures. Bill is quite interested in doing things
like building Axiom on native GCL and native noweb, both of which
I've rejected. A silver build can do anything you want.
