Is there meant to be a way of telling what version the
CVS server is running?

Can you try CVS 1.11.9 unchanged, windows version,
using :ext:you@cvs.sf.net:/cvsroot/pdos

and do a cvs rlog pdos/src/pdos.c

just to confirm that it works for you on the same file?
