Commenting on the wrong thing, I am afraid. We are not talking about
plain TeX here, we are talking about LaTeX. And in particular about
keeping to use deprecated interfaces in LaTeX that are left in only
for compatibility reasons and have undesirable effects (you can't use
them for bold italics, for example). That those sequences are also
available in plain TeX is a historical accident, so to say, and says
nothing about the imprudence of using them in LaTeX.
