It wouldn't surprise me, but is that really what Ralf said?  I'm
probably confused, but I thought this was the state of things:

21.1
        Compiler:       archive libs    shared libs

        MIPSpro 7.2     
        MIPSpro 7.3                     fails
        gcc w/7.2 libc  works
        gcc w/7.3 libc  works

21.2/21.1+patch

        Compiler:       archive libs    shared libs
        -----------     ------------    -----------
        MIPSpro 7.2     
        MIPSpro 7.3                     almost works (21.1+)
        gcc w/7.2 libc  fails
        gcc w/7.3 libc  works
