Just my two pence as an outsider, but shouldn't you be perhaps be  
discussing the provider first?

Data loss on this scale is simply breath-taking to me as a  
professional. What the hell kind of backup regime were savannah  
running that they couldn't at least restore a recent backup in a  
timely manner?

I'm 100% for GNU-friendly providers for this project, but surely there  
are other GNU-friendly providers you can consider, since savannah has  
failed so egregiously?
