cvsup doesnt use cvs as fra as I know, but if it works with GNUMail then its
obviously not that then. I have to admit I was rather clutching at straws
there.

cvs -z 9 in that case I guess. Thats not going to be fun though on dialup
I agree.
Could it be that theres some bad ibrary in your FreeBSD install which is
messing things up ? Again I am only making guess, as other than that
the only thing I can say is the spectacularly unhelful "it works fine
on the machine in front of me" which doesnt help disgnose the problems
sadly.
I have to sday that I always download a fresh copy of the gnustep soource if
it has been a few weeks since my last update - I only use cvs update if
I am tracking changes over a few days (.e.g the recent gpbs stuff)
