I've placed a patch that fixes the serial console problems at
ftp://ftp.visi.com/users/grante/grub/grub-0.91-vga16-serial.patch
This allows both vga16 console (with splashimage) and serial
terminal to be specified, thus providing an ideal blend of the
utilitarian and the frivolous. :)
This patch also changes the message printed while polling
consoles. It used to be "Press any key to continue" and I've
changed it to "Press key to activiate this console". The
former seemed a bit misleading in the case where there's a
terminal timeout -- the user doesn't actually have to press a
key to continue, the machine will select the default console
anyway.
The above patch should be applied after the RedHat vga16 patch,
of which I've placed a copy at:
ftp://ftp.visi.com/users/grante/grub/grub-0.91-vga16.patch
OT: Has anybody used serial ports under bochs? I couldn't get
either pty or real serial ports to work. Both grub and DOS
6.22 just hung when they tried to access COM1 under bochs.
I had to resort to actually rebooting my machine and using
a PalmPilot for a serial terminal. Since I don't run
Windows much anymore, I had forgotten how boring it is
watching a machine reboot over, and over, and over...
