It's my understanding that if you install GSL via 'mac port' 
(http://www.macports.org/), it will choose clang if you have a 
relatively modern version of OS X.

IMVHO, it is quite established that './configure' defaults to 
'./configure CC=gcc' and anything else would be unexpected.
