I think so; search for putenv occurrences in the Autoconf manual.

Argh. Yes, this might be a problem. I tested what I suggested on
GNU/Linux, but it might hurt elsewhere. How about nulling out the
variable only.
Hmm, I guess I should retract my OK; I obviously haven't grokked the
test and the problem space enough yet.
