Indeed. I can reproduce this on small scale.

Looks rather like a bug. Probably some unnoticed regression.
I'll have to investigate.

The -indev -outdev method of "modifying" is less tested than
the -dev method of "growing".
With -dev, the old file data stay were they are and cannot
get reduplicated. The medium must be appendable (image files
always are) and offer enough writable capacity for a new
directory tree.
