I just did a from-scratch rebuild of the current git revision on
Ubuntu 9.10, no issues.  I suspect this may have to do with a build
tree left over from a prior compile.  Did you just upgrade from 9.04
to 9.10 perhaps?  In any case, the complete
nuke-it-all-to-pristine-state command in git is:

$ git clean -d -x -f

Then you can bootstrap, configure, make, etc.
