I think we had discussions about this before. Anyway, I'm pretty sure that NeXT actually draws a solid background. It's just the way the the DPS engine renders the color that makes it looked stippled. If you look at the actual PS output from screen drawing, it is extremely compact and elegant.

If you have a NeXT, you can view the PS output. I'm completely blanking on how to do this, but it is in the documentation. Do something like run the app from a terminal with a

-PostScriptOutput=YES

argument...
