I hope that this does not seem like a waste of time to others, but, I think someone should wrote a really solid "open letter" to this guy to let him and others know that he's mistaken, to get the good word out about GNUstep.

The first glaring points that come to mind is:

1. Misunderstanding Ubuntu
Ubuntu didn't write Gnome, nautilus, dpkg, CUPS, samba, or any other of the thousands of packages it pulls together, from scratch. They drew on the work of others, making enhancements, writing scripts, etc. This guy doesn't seem to understand that. He writes that GNUstep is "not mainstream"; well, if he really feels that's the case he should work on getting it there, as the Ubuntu people did for Gnome, a project long accused of never being mainstream.

2. The 'NS' issue
Obviously everyone on this list knows that 'GS' classes/functions should be considered sort of "private", and that applications that use them directly are generally being sketchy. Point out that this is in fact _better_ for Mac compatibility, as let's say GNUstep introduces class NSFoo, then Apple introduces their own distinct NSFoo later, and that means breakage. GSFoo would save us from that.

3. Horzontal menus
Point out "defaults write NSGlobalDomain NSMenuInterfaceStyle NSMacintoshInterfaceStyle", maybe conceed that it could use a convenient GUI in some as-of-yet-unwritten desktop environment.

4. Cocoa compatibility
Point out that it's a large goal, highlight NIB work, etc.

5. Difference between dev tools and desktop
Maybe conceed that it would be nice if more people worked on an integrated desktop solution based on GNUstep, invite and welcome people that wish to do this, etc.

Just some thoughts on what I'd write, were I to counter this guy. I think it might be a good idea. A lot of you seem to think it's better just to ignore him.

Andrew
