If I may add to this, if you want to use apple’s compilers for this, i recommend re-compiling GCC and their CCtools in order to get the latest linker and compiler binaries. It is basically what I amd oing…tryign to build a package. But i am stuck with building GCC :/. The reason is that clang appearently has some weird behaviors that is not really expected during building.

Although even these instructions are old and probably out of date. You are on your own if you want to do this though. Trying to install GNUstep on OSX has turned many a programmer prematurely grey. ;-)
