Yeah, that would be very nice, IMO.

If it turns out that M-g is currently very much unused, how good (or
bad) would it be to use that instead of the (perhaps more logical)
proposal you made?

M-g c => compile (M-g c read as "Go Compile!" ;)
M-g r => recompile
M-g n => next-error
M-g l => goto-line (read as "Goto Line")
