What do you mean by "they"?  "Unicode support" and
"antialiazed font support"?  The latter is just a side
effect of supporting client side fonts (e.g. Xft/Freetype).
And support for client side fonts is surely necessary for a
good support of Unicode because many Asian scripts require
OpenType fonts (available only by client side fonts).
