No, it isn't. But if you can get info about exactly what parts needs to be updated, maybe redisplay could do less work. But the main point is that if you use double buffering (i.e. first render in an off-screen pixmap, and then copy the pixmap to the X window in one go), you can use a very crude redisplay, since you always copy from an up-to-date copy. No need to worry about flickering.
