Maybe I am misunderstanding you.
As I understood your suggestion:
<.....foo> ... whitespace ... <bar ... >
Since \s- as a regexp matches whitespace the regexp "foo\s-*bar" would match
the end of the first range and the beginning of the second range separated
by whitespace.
