To me, delete-selection-mode is an optimization, it saves keystrokes
allowing to type less - I don't need to type DEL to delete an old region
before replacing it with new text. Also jumping to the previous mark
is easy with C-u C-SPC when there is no need to select the region
as C-x C-x does. And I never make a mistake when I see that the region
is active to not replace it mistakenly.
