"master" is original as in the "master copy".
Branches should be those deriving from master.
main as noun does not fit there, but as adjective it would fit.
Would you say "main-branch" or "main-copy" it would make more sense
with main as adjective. Not as noun.
Master as noun fits well:
6. (1) master, master copy, original -- (an original creation (i.e.,
an audio recording) from which copies can be made)
