Furthermore, most of the sync solutions for org-mode recommend proprietary Dropbox or Google Drive. Both of these take some effort to set up. I would expect a paid Emacs to come with a free software sync service.

This model could be extended to Emacs as a whole. Some of the money could be used to pay maintainers, others for support personnel, others to the FSF.
