It ain't broke; please don't "fix" it. And
real Emacs improvements are still possible...
Having just read this thread and the significant collection of
complications being discussed, I can only agree with Drew --
let's not default to introducing issues for users where none
previously existed.
(Tangentially I also think curly quotes cause more problems
than they do improvements.)
Most users will already have a good monospace font configured
for Emacs, and the things being discussed will not be problems
for them, so I'm in favour of any such changes being opt-in,
rather than risk their existing proportional font configuration
making Emacs look bad all of a sudden.
At minimum these changes should be options.
