It's possible that the crux of the matter is that the monospaced font has been hand-picked and tweaked over the years, whereas the proportional one is something automatically selected by the system.

I find the trick of looking nice (for me at least) to be using a sans serif font in light (or ultra light) weight, and add some padding on top and bottom:
