I don't know the difference.
I'm talking about what appears on my screen.

These two lines

> \u2666 ♦        BLACK DIAMOND SUIT
> \u25c8 ◈        WHITE DIAMOND CONTAINING BLACK SMALL DIAMOND

display on my Linux console with a diamond.  The same diamond glyph
that user to represent undisplayable characters.

I like this diamond better than ?.  Maybe that is because ? really
appears in text.
