That's odd: there is a dependency expressed in Makefile.am:

fut.h: fut-template.h template2h.pl

so patching fut-template.h should get fut.h regenerated.

That requires a perl interpreter. Not having one is not that common, but
it's a situation similar to generating the Makefile.in files: the
content does not depend on the target system and needs some dependencies
that could be avoided.
