yes evaluating the result would be easier with Perl, but why reinvent the functionality of smsd? Wouldn't it be easier to modify smsd to launch the Perl script on receipt of an SMS? If the script get to parse a text file it doesn't even need to know about gnokii.
Could someone explain what SMSD is and what it's for? Why would anybody be using words "SQL" and "receiving SMS" in a same sentence?

It has zero documentation in the wiki. It does not use autoconf/automake. It seems to have packages on various distros and even a man-page. However, among all unclear things is if it can be used for anything practical.

Does anybody know how to start one? For a daemon it seems to lack init-script.
Is anybody using it?
Does anybody know the DB schema for tables?
Why would anybody waste project's precious development resources for something as trivial as message handling?
Why is SMSD in Gnokii anyway? Shouldn't it be in gnokii-extras?
Wouldn't it be lot easier to check incoming SMS-messages with a bash or a PHP -script?

And no. You don't have to answer any of those. Just pause for a second and think. If the piece of software is valuable, categorize it, make it compile and document it. If it isn't, scrap it.

For those that don't know Perl but know PHP here is a shameless plug :-)
Great progress there!
It would be nice to have that as a PECL-package.
