looks like this can be solved by getting arch to set the right umask.
quite easy really.

Thanks Ethan, that sounded very sensible.

Tom, any objections?  Xouvert needs to release something within the
next 10 days, and we're willing to tell our developers they have to use
your very latest developement version.

Can we get a "tla umask" command added, which will put the umask in
{arch}/=meta-info/=umask, and then have the sftp transport set the umask
at the beginning of each session?
