You might, we wouldn't.  Most likely we would use the version number
for the patch number (third component).  That's how "commit --seal"
works, and it would fit well with our existing practices.

The fact is that there are a lot of things that a "sophisticated"
management might want to do that just aren't going to work without a
server.  (It doesn't have to be a "smart arch server", a patch queue
manager will work fine.)
