The 'arch way' would be to create a cacherev for whatever you'll need
speedier access to.  A cacherev is a tarred gzip, not raw files, but
that should be fast enough to check out.  Libraries are cache, and it's
best to avoid sharing caches whenever you can.

1. You can make life easier by making the removable storage device the
One True Archive.  Then, no mirroring is required.

2. How you get your working directory at work isn't all that
significant.  For example, you can tar up your home working directory. 
Then you can use a network-accessible machine as the One True Archive.
