Yes, in essense, to the parenthetical.  But how long?  For a long
time.

The breakthrough was figuring out how to do selected commits.  The
low-level thing that makes that work has a bunch of generalizations
which in turn suggest the proposed features.   (And more -- there's a
file-locking thing in there too but I haven't been able to articulate
it yet.)

As I explained to someone else recently, it was very annoying,
actually.   I cracked the selective commit code a few days ago, but
that suggested a bunch of other stuff, and I haven't been able to
think about anything else since.   No, really -- I missed my
mopping-the-kitchen-floor appointment and everything.   Totally threw
off an entire week.
