I haven't really been keeping up with this discussion, but isn't
all of this what 'configure' and configure scripts are for?

The idea of hardwiring redundant information about tla's behavior
into tla sounds like a terrible idea to me.  Just another thing
to keep synchronized that will never be maintained quite well enough.

Isn't maybe a better approach for people to start accumulating
configure scripts that _actually_ determine what tla does, rather
than make assumptions about what it might do in version X, or
trust that some version is going to be "honest" about what it
really does?
