[Gnu-arch-users] Weird 'tla changes' behaviour

The tree I'm using is nearly 600 megs in size and is mostly hardlinked
to the repository. There's one XML file changed.

First, tla segfaulted on a 'tla changes'. So I ran it over and over
again to see what happened. Several successful runs. A couple
segfaults.  Then, it reported this:

D/ units/kahan
A/ units/kahan
M  vegastrike.config
/> units/kahan/.arch-ids        units/kahan/.arch-ids
=> units/kahan/BFXMMake units/kahan/BFXMMake
=> units/kahan/destroyer-hud.png        units/kahan/destroyer-hud.png
=> units/kahan/destroyer-hud.spr        units/kahan/destroyer-hud.spr
=> units/kahan/destroyer.xmesh  units/kahan/destroyer.xmesh
=> units/kahan/destroyer2.xmesh units/kahan/destroyer2.xmesh
=> units/kahan/kahan    units/kahan/kahan
=> units/kahan/kahan.bfxm       units/kahan/kahan.bfxm
=> units/kahan/kahan.blank      units/kahan/kahan.blank
=> units/kahan/kahan.box        units/kahan/kahan.box
=> units/kahan/kahan.template   units/kahan/kahan.template
=> units/kahan/kahanbox.xmesh   units/kahan/kahanbox.xmesh

So presumably, it got the ID on the directory mixed up, and thought that
everything had moved to the same directory, different ID.

The following run, it reported this:

D  sprites/bases/generic/generic_sunset.png
A  sprites/bases/generic/generic_sunset.png
M  vegastrike.config

Obviously, it's an explicitly-tagged file, so it again somehow thought
that the file had changed IDs.

And now, everything seems fine and I'm getting no weird results no
matter how many times I run it.

The filesystem is ext3. The CPU is a P4 1.8 GHz, as a speed reference.
'tla changes' tends to take a few seconds to run:

        tla changes 3.53s user 0.67s system 99% cpu 4.235 total

So, uhh... what gives? Should I be concerned about the filesystem?
The disk? The system? Or just tla? (Aside from its recent politics.)
