How did you produce the .ps file?  Did you maybe use lilypond's direct
postscript output: -fps?  If you do that, the .ps file does not
contain fonts.

You should first try to run

   ly2dvi -P foo.ly

and use the resulting .ps.  You can also run dvips to produce your .ps
file.
