"Some of the lines" are precisely those lines modified by your patch
with an indentation of 8 steps or more.

Your patch was fine. The error was introduced later, probably when Dan
downloaded the patch from the archive (his original mail had been
lost) and apparently involved a conversion of the tabs in the patch
into spaces. Due to the format of the diff output, the first tab on
each line was converted into one space too few, which caused the
offset by one after patching.
