Oh, OK. What *I* did not realize is that

        @{\extracolsep{\fill}}

is intended to define the width of the first column to:

        "as-needed + plus dynamic horizontal filler, total constrained by table 
width"

Correct ?

If so, why don't we "auto-size" all the columns (including
the p{6.5cm} ones) ?
