I get the impression that there is no real technical reason,
but there is a philosophical belief that vendor branches are
a Good Thing, and everybody should use them whether they want
to or not.

Vendor branches are a Good Thing in some cases and you should use them if your situation is one of those cases.

CVS import is a handy way to do the recursive add if you don't mind the vendor branch stuff that goes along with it. If that bothers you, then don't use it.
