Mmm...much faster PC...

Full test results (of the second version of this patch; the one that was
the first one posted with this subject line):

MinGW/MSYS:
===========
old: 2 of 104 tests failed (2 tests were not run)
As expected, the two failures are the mdemo exec tests:
        FAIL: tests/mdemo-exec.test
        FAIL: tests/mdemo2-exec.test

new: 102 tests behaved as expected. 18 tests were skipped.

I know a slightly different version of this patch has already been
pushed, but I figure test results are never a bad thing.
