Or maybe until someone wants to create a translation of the manual.
In any case, I would suggest to use multiline strings only for
'docstrings'.

It's already being 'enforced' by xgettext, in that you can't localise
those strings. Can't/shouldn't we think of a smart preprocessor hack,
or an emacs c-mode hack.
