Searching around on the net it appears it's a serious problem with
Thunderbird (and one the Linux kernel community has been quite pissed
off about for some length of time).
I'm going to try git-send-email for patches in future ... :-)
The other workaround that works is sending the patch via a webmail interface. This method does not require zipping the file. It works on gmail and juno webmail, and probably most others.
