Do these instructions work reliably for anybody?

mkdir new-lilypond-dir
cd new-lilypond-dir
git init
git config core.bare false
git remote add -t master origin git://git.sv.gnu.org/lilypond.git
git fetch --depth 1


I've tried them half a dozen times, and it only worked once (at the
very end, just when I was about to claim that they didn't work at
all).  Does fetch --depth X   put a large CPU load on the server or
something?
