Sounds to me like you are in violent agreement.  At least that is the
way I understand "where dir-n is the directory name in which the snippet
is found in the tarball".  I don't see that Phil's proposal is supposed
to generate any number.  We should really communicate in Texinfo: I
understood him to be talking about @var{dir-1} whereas you complained
about @file{dir-1}.
