I disagree (partly).
I remember as newbie I _always_ used \relative.
Once it comes to more complex situations (polyphonic music) it becomes
more, well, more complex.
Once copy/paste is wished, or worse, applying music-functions to
extracts of relative-music it has serious draw-backs or at least is
inconvenient.
Nowadays I still use \relative for simple things and I see no reason
not to recommend so.
For more involved work abolute-mode is preferable, imho.
