Can you compile a file made of your LaTeX preamble to which you append
\begin{document}
\typeout{textwidth=\the\textwidth}
\typeout{columnsep=\the\columnsep}
\makeatletter\if@twocolumn\typeout{columns=2}\fi\makeatother
\end{document}
and attach the .log file?
