Musically I can't see a way of altering the notation.  I am already using a font which has a much smaller clef size - it's the space around it that's the issue.  I have attached images of the bar concerned in the composer's MS and my engraving - you can see that there is lots of scope to reduce the space round the clef.  However, perusal of the clef internals has left me none the wiser how to do it.

Can you not simply make the clef smaller? It has a settable size
property if I recall correctly. Sometimes I need to do this too. And
there are space setting also that you could look up in the internals
manual. Failing all else, renotation of the section in question may be
your only answer.
