In Canada typists have usually been taught to put two spaces after
punctuation that ends a sentence, and often after a colon that precedes
a list.

I don't know if there are rules about typestting or not (though I
presume there are).  My guess is that it looks better in typesetting to
have a slightly wider gap between sentences too, perhaps an EM space
instead of an EN space (to use the troff terms).
