I've looked though my copy of "Managing Projects with Gnu Make"
Robert Mecklenburg, O'Reilly,  and can't find anything either.  Normally
this sort of thing is dealt with by configure in the GNU world,
so autoconf docs may be more instructive.  Probably autotools now.
That book says that you can use automake to make your makefiles more
portable, but I find it difficult to keep up with this side of GNU
developments, to be honest.
