Or all or most of the 94 or so ASCII printable characters.

Using Japanese characters would reduce it even more.

Or the entire set of Unicode printable characters!  This might be *very*
good as a display representation, each ID would look *very* distinctive.
Believe me.  You might not know what to *call* a character, but you're not
likely to confuse a Georgian character with a Japanese or Sanskrit one.

You would need some way to get your display to give you a typable one
when you need it, but that might be a separate issue.
