That is only the current behaviour when markmatch is set.
I think the idea of making highlight the default is, that markmatch
could still be used by you, by me when I do macro stuff, or by other
people who have started to use the 5.5 release.
The selecting is quite invasive, and arguably should not be the default,
but highlighting is innocuous and I don't think anybody would object to
that being the normal behaviour.
